June 18th - Walk, Wheel, and Ride to School Day
Walk, Wheel, and Ride to School Day
We are excited to share that on Wednesday, June 18, Fraser Middle School will be participating in Walk, Wheel, and Ride to School Day.
This one-day event is intended to build awareness and encourage students to try active ways of getting to school. Students may choose to travel all or part of the way under their own power – walking, biking, or scootering.
Over the past few months, Grade 8 students have been exploring the question:
Why don’t more students walk to school?
Through their research, they found that approximately 60% of Fraser students are driven to school each day. Parent survey feedback identified common barriers, including busy roadways, distance, safety concerns, unsafe crossings, and limited sidewalks in some areas.
Students have also worked with Fraser Health representatives to better understand the benefits of regular physical activity and to begin identifying possible solutions that may support safer and more accessible routes to school.
Recognizing that active travel is not feasible for all families, this event provides an opportunity to consider small, manageable options.
Optional ways to participate:
-
Walk, bike, or roll to school on June 18
-
Use a “Drive to 5” approach (park a short distance away and walk the remainder)
-
Organize or join a Walking School Bus (students walking together with an adult)
-
Support visibility and safety along routes when possible
Families are encouraged to stay tuned to the school website as students begin to share some of their ideas and proposed solutions to help make this day a success.
Any level of participation contributes to ongoing conversations about student safety, access, and well-being within the school community.
Thank you for your continued support.
