Human and Social Development
Our students will study personal and human social skills and as they relate to students' identity in the world - both as individuals and as members of their community. We are learning that personal and human social skills encompass the abilities students needs to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world.
Goals
- Improve student sense of well-being.
Task Baskets Supporting Diversity and Inclusion
At William A. Fraser Middle School, our school goal around diversity focuses on creating inclusive learning environments where all students feel respected, supported, and able to belong. We recognize that students come to school with a wide range of strengths, needs, and experiences, and that learning looks different for each child. When students feel understood and supported, they are more likely to engage positively with others and take part in learning.
One way we bring this goal to life is through Learning Support Services initiatives such as Task Baskets, which provide flexible support that responds to students’ needs in the moment.
Task baskets are simple, hands‑on activities that staff can quickly access when students need support with regulation, focus, or transitions. They offer structured, predictable tasks that help reduce stress, build confidence, and support continued engagement in learning. By meeting students where they are, task baskets help ensure that students remain included and connected to their classroom and school community.
Strengthening Relationships and a Sense of Belonging
Task baskets also play an important role in strengthening relationships and a sense of belonging. When staff can respond quickly and calmly with supportive tools to help students engage in learning, students experience care, understanding, and respect. These moments help build trust and strengthen relationships between students and the adults who support them.
As students experience success with these structured supports, they develop important skills such as self‑management, problem‑solving, and independence. Over time, students learn to recognize when they need support and use appropriate strategies to stay connected to learning. These skills support long‑term success at school and beyond.
Looking Ahead
Fraser Middle School remains committed to building inclusive environments that honour diversity and support all learners. The use of task baskets demonstrates how small, intentional support embedded into everyday practice can make a meaningful difference in student well‑being, engagement, and sense of belonging.
By creating inclusive and responsive learning spaces, we are supporting students in developing the skills, confidence, and resilience they need for today and the future. This work reflects our shared commitment to preparing and inspiring students for a lifetime of success, ensuring every student has the opportunity to feel safe, supported, and successful at William A. Fraser Middle School.
The Fraser Middle School Library Learning Commons
The Library Learning Commons is an important learning space at Fraser Middle School. It supports our school’s focus on critical thinking, collaboration, inclusion, perspective taking, and student well‑being.
Through shared learning experiences—such as book club discussions, Indigenous art and math activities, collaborative math challenges, digital music projects, and more—students are supported to:
- Think critically while listening to and respecting different perspectives
- Work together in inclusive and supportive learning environments
- Build confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging
- Strengthen literacy and numeracy through meaningful, connected learning
- Learn in ways that are hands‑on, culturally responsive, and engaging
The Library Learning Commons reflects our commitment to equity, inclusion, and student voice. It provides learning opportunities that meet the needs of diverse learners and honour many ways of knowing.
Alignment with Abbotsford School District Vision
The Fraser Commons aligns closely with the Abbotsford School District’s strategic priorities. Through inquiry‑based and cross‑curricular learning, students have flexible access to learning and multiple pathways to success.
By bringing literacy, numeracy, arts, culture, and technology together in one shared space, the Library Learning Commons supports the district’s goal of preparing students to be thoughtful, collaborative, and engaged learners.
A Shared Vision for Learning
Our Library Learning Commons is more than a physical space—it reflects who we are as a school community. It is built on the shared belief that learning is:
- Collaborative
- Inclusive
- Creative
- Connected to the real world
Through the Fraser Commons, students are supported to learn, create, and grow together—every day.
Let's Paint to Bring Awareness
A celebration of Eid Al Fitr
A celebration of Eid Al Fitr in which parents and staff organized a cultural learning experience for our students that included Arabic Writing, Henna Art, Traditional Fashion, and Traditional Foods. At W. A. Fraser Middle School, we are committed to creating a learning environment that fosters a strong sense of belonging, and wellness for our students. Through cultural learning experiences, we are continuing to build bridges and mutual respect across cultures.
Our grade 6,7 and 8 classes and Equity Leadership League organized and launched the filming of our Empowering Voices and Building Connections Community Video Project. The turnout was fantastic with over 300 submissions by our students, parents and community guests joining us at W. A. Fraser Middle School over our two film days. Each student was asked to select a teacher that made a difference in their life.
Students discussed what someone having a positive difference in their life could look like. Students also researched community members roles and contributions such as the role of a paramedics, police officers and many more. Students learned that they even if they had not yet personally met these community members it would be just as important to share with them how they have made a difference in the lives of students.
Next student wrote paragraphs explaining how and why this educator, community member or family member made a difference in their life. This is how the uplifting others, building connections and empowering student voices community project began. Our students flourish through acts of kindness and service, finding empowerment in sharing their authentic voices to inspire and uplift others.
